Serena Williams makes her feelings known about Jannik Sinner’s doping ban
Jannik Sinner received a three-month doping ban from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after both parties reached the case resolution. Serena Williams, during the same interview with TIME, said she has no doubts about Sinner’s innocence and suggested that the anti-doping agencies would have banned her had she become a victim of accidental contamination.
If I did that, I would have gotten 20 years. Let’s be honest.
Serena Williams said
Sinner, tested positive for clostebol twice last year, and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) gave a no-fault or negligence verdict, shocking the entire tennis world, for many were convinced that Sinner voided a ban because he is a top player. Then WADA interfered and approached the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to demand a ban of between one to two years.
After Sinner’s victory at the Australian Open this year, WADA announced that they withdrew their appeal and handed Sinner only a three-month ban. The three-time Grand Slam champion, who started his training in Monte Carlo, will make his comeback at the Italian Open, which starts on May 7. Sinner is prohibited from official tournaments till May 4.
