Tyleik Williams pick leaves Lions fans scratching their heads (but he'll be great)

The Detroit Lions decided that it was more important to secure a quality run-stuffer in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft than giving Aidan Hutchinson a true running mate on the other side of their pass rush, as Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes used the No. 28 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams.

Williams comes to the NFL with concerns about his overall skill when it comes to pressuring the quarterback. However, that shouldn't mean that Lions fans should walk around feeling somewhat bummed out about the idea of picking him.

When a team like the Lions is pushing for a title, role-players who can do one job really well are worth their weight in gold. By the end of the year, Williams should be starting alongside Alim McNeil and proving those who doubted his selection utterly wrong.

Lions land solid run-stuffing DT in Tyleik Williams during NFL Draft

Williams was one of the best run-stuffers in the country last season, as his massive 320-pound frame could be used effectively as both a space-eater and a penetrator who can make tackles in the open field. Williams seems like the type of tackle Campbell and Holmes have valued in past seasons.

Williams' pass rush upside will determine how good he will be in the pros. If he never figures it out, he will likely be destined for a long career as a very specific rotational lineman. If he does, he might compete for some Pro Bowl nods while he's on his rookie contract.

Williams, McNeil, and Hutchinson together make up a good chunk of what could be one of the best defensive lines in the NFC. Detroit is by no means done adding to this defense, which could help Williams become the leading member of a rookie class that keeps the Lions as an elite unit.
