Unsigned free-agent wide receiver sure sounds like he wants to be with 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have had to scramble recently to address their wide receiver depth issues. They may have just gotten a gift with free-agent wide receiver Gabe Davis saying he would want to play for the Niners.

Unsigned free-agent wide receiver sure sounds like he wants to be with 49ers

Davis made these comments on the Up & Adams Show, saying, "San Fran is definitely a spot I’m looking at. [Kyle] Shanahan’s the man. He knows how to call an offense. They just got a lot of great weapons around there… Definitely a team that interests me because I like to be around great players."

Ignoring the fact that he said "San Fran," which is sure to earn him at least a little heat from fans, it would certainly be interesting if the 49ers were to add Davis even if he is an imperfect fit.

He enjoyed great success with the Buffalo Bills in his first four NFL seasons, hauling in 27 touchdown passes and establishing himself as a favorite weapon of quarterback Josh Allen. Davis even earned himself the moniker “Big Game Gabe” for his performance in the playoffs.

Last season with Jacksonville was not as fruitful, though. Davis caught just 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Even though Jacksonville had signed him to a multi-year deal prior to 2024, they decided to let him go, so he is now a free agent.

Davis would be an intriguing addition to a Shanahan offense. Davis has typically been regarded as a deep threat down the field, which runs counter to the sort of offense that Shanahan typically likes to run. However, maybe adding Davis would give the 49ers a new wrinkle to the offense that catches teams off guard.

Quarterback Brock Purdy has proven he is accurate throwing the ball downfield even if he does not have as strong of an arm as Allen. Shanahan clearly has a lot of trust in Purdy, so maybe he feels comfortable airing it out more with him under center.

The Niners have already made some moves to add wide receiver depth with all of the issues they have at wide receiver right now from contract disputes to injuries and potential suspensions.

If Davis wants to be in San Francisco, the 49ers would be wise to seriously consider bringing him. They reportedly already met with him a few months ago so there appears to be at least some mutual interest. The Niners could clearly use more help at wide receiver and Davis would give them something their offense currently does not have.
