Vikings Pursuit of Daniel Jones Prior to Colts Deal Hit with Major Revelation

The Minnesota Vikings lost another one of their quarterbacks on Tuesday when Daniel Jones opted to sign a one-year, $14 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts. While the Vikings eventually decided to go a different route at quarterback, a new report revealed how interested they were in reuniting with Jones in free agency.

After he was released by the New York Giants midway through the 2024 campaign, Jones latched on with the Vikings, although he did not play a snap for them during his time with the team. Even with his struggles, Jones drew interest from several teams on the open market, with the Colts coming out on top.

"Former Vikings QB Daniel Jones is finalizing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts, per sources. Jones had a chance to return to Minnesota, but now becomes the challenger to the Colts’ former first-round pick Anthony Richardson," Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Tuesday.

Minnesota's interest in Jones became particularly noteworthy once Sam Darnold signed a three-year, $100 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks. As it turns out, the Vikings made a competitive offer to Jones and wanted him to return to the team, but they eventually conceded that he was going to sign with the Colts.

"Minnesota is still discussing where they go at quarterback, in adding to JJ McCarthy in the room. The Vikings made an offer to Daniel Jones that was very competitive with Indy’s. And obviously if they decide to pursue Aaron Rodgers, they’d have a great situation to offer him," Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported in a post on X.

With Jones gone, that leaves J.J. McCarthy as the only quarterback on the Vikings roster for the time being. However, they could opt to pursue another veteran quarterback in free agency, as they continue to be mentioned as a dark horse team in the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes.
