Vikings rookie turning heads at OTAs (and it's not who you think)

Behind J.J. McCarthy on the quarterback depth chart for the Minnesota Vikings, most have assumed that the battle for the top backup job will be between Sam Howell and Brett Rypien this summer. However, undrafted rookie signal-caller Max Brosmer might have something to say about that.

Minnesota Vikings QB Max Brosmer

Earlier this week, Purple Insider's Matthew Coller released an episode of his podcast that featured some of his observations from what he's seen during multiple Vikings OTA practice sessions this year. At one point, Coller talked about how he's been impressed with what Minnesota's undrafted rookie passer has been able to do so far.

"The guy that's impressed me, just to tell you the truth, and I'm not trying to be that guy, but I keep liking what I see from Max Brosmer.

Every time we see Max Brosmer out there, [first during] rookie mini-camp, and now today, he ran a drill at the red zone and had a couple of touchdown passes.

...I like what I've seen from Max Brosmer so far. I don't think he competes for QB2, but he might compete for QB3.”

Max Brosmer could make the backup QB battles quite interesting for the Minnesota Vikings

As an undrafted rookie, Brosmer has the benefit of having very low expectations during Vikings training camp this summer. If he struggles, no one is going to be shocked, but if he does anything that is even slightly impressive, then he's likely going to receive praise.

As the fourth quarterback on Minnesota's depth chart, Brosmer probably isn't going to get a ton of reps in training camp and the preseason this summer. So, if he wants to fly under the radar and win the Vikings' QB2 or QB3 job, then he will need to take full advantage of any time he gets on the field.
