Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2, episode 6!The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon showrunner David Zabel has explained season 3's location change, revealing why it was decided for Daryl and Carol's future. Daryl Dixon season 2 ended with Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) still on a journey to get home, after saving Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) by having him fly to America with Ash (Manish Dayal). Season 3 will show the stranded duo heading not only to England, as established in the finale, but also to Spain, something teased in the latest trailer for the next episodes.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Zabel explained the reasoning behind this change in location, saying Daryl Dixon should feature its core characters traveling to different locations like "a road show" as they attempt to get home. He indicates how Spain will be "reinventing the show" thanks to its new location. He also indicated that, as long as the show keeps getting renewed, it could potentially see the pair in plenty of new countries yet to be disclosed. Check out what Zabel had to say below:
The characters should not settle down. It should be a road show. They have to keep moving [to return home]. At the end of season two, they’re going somewhere. We don’t know exactly where, and it’s not a direct line to the next place they go. But the idea is to keep the characters struggling and striving to get home and moving. [Exploring a new culture is] going to be so exciting for reinventing the show. It felt like all signs pointed toward us continuing to move and get to the next place. In seasons five and six, it could be a different place. They’ll keep moving until they get home!
What David Zabel's Statement Means For Daryl Dixon's Future
Spain Could Be The Start Of A Bigger Road Trip
Details on Daryl Dixon season 3 remain sparse, other than Daryl and Carol will be making a long stop in Spain on their way back to America. This will include the introduction of new characters and fights for them to become embroiled in, much like how Daryl became strongly connected to the Nest and Pouvoir conflict in France. Their travels seem like they'll not only deliver plenty of interesting adventures for them, but also highlight how the zombie apocalypse has impacted parts of the world differently.
Although a further continuation hasn't been confirmed as of writing, Zabel has ideas for Daryl Dixon season 4's location, with this latest statement reflecting just how long the series could go on for. If Daryl and Carol really do have a journey ahead that could last until season 6, then their travels could include countries outside of Europe as well, depending on where their adventure takes them. This change in location might be a drastic shift for the show and Daryl Dixon's characters, but it also offers plenty of potential for how it can evolve into the future.
Our Take On Daryl Dixon Season 3 Changing Locations To Spain
The Show's New Formula Could Introduce Interesting Dynamics
Daryl Dixon's new direction means the show likely won't see new characters introduced stick around for more than a season or two at most. However, it does allow Daryl and Carol to act as conduits to see new perspectives on the apocalypse, emphasizing the different locations they arrive at and how they each deal with zombies in different ways. This could allow for a unique, almost Western-inspired story structure that takes the show in a plethora of creative directions, both in Spain and beyond.
