The story is written and directed by Evan Twohy from his stage play, and Bubble and Squeak marks his debut feature film. According to Deadline, the film is a quirky, surreal comedy in the vein of the late Jeff Baena (I Heart Huckbees, Meet the Fockers).

At the Variety panel held at Sundance, Yeun shared that a well-titled email drew his attention to the project. He loved the script and thought it was "bold and such a wild swing" that he had to be a part of it.

Hamish Patel and Sarah Goldberg portray a married couple, Declan and Delores, who are pursued by border agents who suspect them of smuggling cabbages. Yeun plays a customs officer named Bkofl, and Dave Franco, Matt Berry, and Estonian actors Ursel Tilk, Jaak Prints, and Inga Salurand round out the cast.

Early critical reviews have only ranked 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. But often, quirky films like Bubble and Squeak perform much better with audiences. The inclusion of Patel, Goldberg, Yeun, Franco, and Berry will ensure that their extensive fan base will watch.
