Alex Ovechkin is celebrating his birthday, and the Washington Capitals surprised him with a lovely gift: A fresh jersey with their new screaming eagle logo.
Well, it's official, the Washington Capitals' black Screaming Eagle jersey is back! The team surprised Alex Ovechkin with it today for his birthday, really leaving the franchise superstar in awe.
To commemorate their 50th anniversary, the Caps announced on Tuesday that they will don the iconic 'screaming eagle' jersey six times in the 2024-25 season. Here's when you can see it in action:
Wednesday, Nov. 6th vs. Nashville Predators
Friday, Nov. 29th vs. New York Islanders
Tuesday, Dec. 31st vs. Boston Bruins
Saturday, Jan. 18th vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Saturday, Feb. 1st vs. Winnipeg Jets
Sunday, April 13th vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
You can purchase one of those jerseys online starting Thursday, October 10.
The jersey brings back the blue, black, and bronze color scheme with the Capitol Building on the shoulder. It's a throwback to the classic design first unveiled in 1995, which took elements from their original third jersey and mixed it with their rebrand. The eagle facing downwards, forceful, is an indication of strength, power, and speed since it is a national bird for the United States. The shoulder patch has a Capitol building with two crossed hockey sticks while the other two ends have two stars and a puck.
Fans can buy the jersey on NHLShop.com, NHLShop.ca, shop.monumentalsportsnetwork.com, in the team store at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, or the Capital One Arena Team Store starting on October 10. Fans going to 50 Fest at Capital One Arena presented by TikTok that day, can stop into the team store to get theirs!
