Washington Commanders sign new wide receiver, there’s a role for former Vikings star to take

The Washington Commanders are one player richer going into Week 15. Here’s where the new receiver fits into the offense.

Patriots cut wide receiver K.J. Osborn

The Washington Commanders find themselves holding onto a playoff spot, but only by their fingernails. Had the Commanders been located with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they would have a lead in the division. Instead, they are forced to fight for the Wild Card.

With that being the case, it is hard to say that Jayden Daniels’ roster is complete, or at least complete enough to make a run at the Super Bowl. While the quarterback has received praise from many including Bobby Wagner, there’s always another name worth adding.

While ridiculous trade deadline proposal season is long since over, the Commanders still managed to get a player from another team.

Commanders get former Viking and Patriots receiver

According to Ian Rapoport on Twitter/X, the Commanders picked up KJ Osborn. Osborn had been waived by the Patriots, who are in the process of overhauling their offense.

While his production in 2024 had been beyond disappointing with just seven catches for 57 yards, his time with the Minnesota Vikings suggests there is something worth salvaging.

Osborn earned at least 500 yards in his last three seasons with the Vikings. He also earned 12 total receiving touchdowns between 2021 and 2022, per Pro Football Reference.

Osborn, age 27, still should be sturdy enough to provide some backbone to the Commanders’ wide receiver room.

Where KJ Osborn fits

The key to understanding the move is understanding Noah Brown’s situation. The Hail Mary hero from earlier in the season who defeated Caleb Williams with a last-second touchdown is expected to miss time. As a result, the Commanders most likely picked up Osborn to help fill the gap.

Brown had been a significant depth receiver for the team, earning close to 500 yards in each of the last three seasons.

As it stands, Osborn’s roughly 500-600 yard production fits in here, assuming he can get back to the player he was with the Vikings.
