Freaky Tales, the upcoming film starring Pedro Pascal and Tom Hanks, has unveiled its first trailer.
The anthology action-comedy, which has been directed by Captain Marvel's Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, depicts four interconnected stories in 1980s Oakland as the lives of various characters converge in what is described as a "wild ride".
Ahead of its theatrical release in the US on April 4, Lionsgate has now released the first full-length trailer, with the bloody clip beginning as Pascal's character, Clint, is held at gunpoint.
From there, Clint is enlisted to raid the home of NBA player Sleepy Floyd (Jay Ellis), though he faces opposition from boss The Guy (Ben Mendelsohn) as he attempts to leave the life of crime for good.
The stacked cast for the film also includes Normani, Dominique Thorne, Marshawn Lynch, Jack Champion, Keir Gilchrist, Ji-young Yoo and the late Angus Cloud.
"Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colourful characters – an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector – on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles," reads the logline.
Described as a "pulpy blend of explosive action, edgy humour, gory kills, and sly twists", Freaky Tales garnered generally positive reviews upon its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, with the consensus being that its creative style outweighed any narrative drawbacks.
Bloody Disgusting labelled the film as a "stylish and entertaining genre mixtape", and The Wrap described the adventure as a "bloody, fun, very '80s time on the weirder side of Oakland, California."
The New York Post lauded the film for its period detail, writing that "the detailed and authentic '80s aesthetic conjures a spell." Entertainment Weekly was similarly positive as it praised Freaky Tales for its "psychic energy and violent revenge fantasies".
