The first tournament of the North American hard-court swing, the City Open, will be wrapped up on Sunday (July 27). The main draw of the Canadian Open is scheduled to start on Sunday.
Canadian Masters is the first of the two combined ATP and WTA tournaments of the 1000 category. The qualifying rounds of both events are underway on the outdoor hardcourts of the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, Ontario (men). Women are playing their matches at the IGA Stadium in Montreal, Quebec.
Alexei Popyrin will enter the tournament as the defending champion on the men’s side, while on the women’s side, Jessica Pegula is the defending champion. On the men’s and women’s sides, World No.3 Alexander Zverev and World No.2 Coco Gauff are the first seeds, respectively.
Gauff has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals in the tournament (reached the last eight three times). Zverev is a one-time champion in the event (defeated 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in 2017). The three-time Grand Slam finalist will be hoping to turn things around after inconsistent performances.
Several top players from both the ATP and WTA won’t be playing. Aryna Sabalenka, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic have pulled out of the event. They are expected to start their campaign in North America at the Cincinnati Masters, the second combined ATP and WTA event of the 1000 category, scheduled to start on August 12.
Though it’s unclear whether the 24-time Grand Slam champion would be returning to Cincinnati. The last time the 38-year-old played at the Canadian Open was in 2018. He was the winner in Cincinnati in 2023 (beat Alcaraz).
Iga Swiatek, a semifinalist in 2023, will be playing her first tournament since winning her sixth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon by outclassing Anisimova. She had skipped the event last year.
Prize money for the 2025 Canadian Open
The Canadian Masters does not offer equal prize money to its men’s and women’s players. For men, the total prize pool is $9,193,540, while for women, it’s $5,152,599, and the champion will receive $752,275. The men’s champion will get $1,124,380.
