What Mina Kimes said about the Houston Texans should have fans elated for 2025 season, ‘arguably the best…’

The Houston Texans have now gone 10-7 in back-to-back seasons, reaching the divisional round of the playoffs on both occasions. They’re building a winning franchise, and Mina Kimes had a major statement to make about them on ESPN.

The Houston Texans triumphed, 32-12, in large part to a suffocating defensive perfromance.

While the Houston Texans‘ offense battled a lot of injuries in 2024, the defense was outstanding. Several pieces across the defensive unit have developed into young stars, and if the offense is healthy this season, Houston may be in the conversation for the AFC Championship.

Texans are building momentum, Mina Kimes impressed by roster

The Houston Texans made major waves in the 2023 NFL draft when they selected CJ Stroud second overall, and then immediately traded up to the third overall pick to claim defensive end Will Anderson Jr.

It was a major statement from the Texans, who gave up their 12th overall pick, 33rd overall pick, a 2024 first-rounder, and a 2024 third-rounder. It was a huge swing at the time for two of the biggest names in the draft class, but two years later, both are reaching superstar status in the league.

CJ Stroud had one of the best rookie seasons of any quarterback in NFL history, and if Jayden Daniels hadn’t come along and done the same thing a year later, we’d still be talking about it. Stroud threw over 4,100 yards and 23 touchdowns as a rookie, and while his 2024 season was not quite as productive, injuries were a major reason for it.

Will Anderson Jr. posted seven sacks as a rookie and was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. He then hit double digits in 2024 with 12 sacks, eight quarterback hits, and 31 total hurries, cementing his status as one of the best pass rushers in the NFL.

Mina Kimes believes Will Anderson’s presence and the emergence of other talented playmakers around him, give the Houston Texans an edge with one of the best defenses in the NFL.

She recently ranked her top 10 defenses on ESPN, and as she counted down to the top three, the Texans name still hadn’t been called. She eventually ranked them second, ahead of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the talented Baltimore Ravens, second only to the Denver Broncos.

“I even thought about putting the Houston Texans as number one because they have it all talent wise. Arguably the best four-man rush in football with Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. on opposite sides. The corner group is outrageous, Derek Stingley Jr. is unbelievable, Kamari Lassiter was so good last year, and they traded for CJ Gardner-Johnson.”

Kimes is a firm believer in what DeMeco Ryans is building, and spoke highly of the defensive-minded coach’s ability to coach a team.

Houston had the best record against opponents throwing the football in 2024, allowing just a 58.27% completion rate throughout the season. They were also the number one team in the league in interceptions forced per throw, and ranked as a top five team in total takeaways on the season.

Texans’ excellent drafting sets up Super Bowl push

The Houston Texans have landed excellent defensive personnel in the draft over the last two seasons. Will Anderson kicked it off in the first round of the 2023 class, but they landed linebacker Henry To’o To’o in the fifth round, and he has already shown an excellent ability to defend the run in the league.

The 2024 class featured more high-level picks, including the cornerback Mina Kimes mentioned, Kamari Lassiter. He was drafted in the second round of a draft that features a wealth of experienced corners, but played among the best of them in his rookie season.

Lassiter had three interceptions and five pass breakups as a rookie, as well as showing the intent to play the run game, something Ryans expects of his defensive backs.

The Texans drafted safety Calen Bullock in the third round of the 2024 draft. He’ll now pair with veteran Super Bowl champion CJ Gardner-Johnson on the backend, an experienced playmaker and tone setter the Texans traded for earlier in the offseason.

Derek Stingley has emerged as one of the best corners in the NFL, and the Texans’ defensive unit as a whole looks prepped for a huge year in 2025.
