Why Are Commanders Tagged With Worst Free Agent Signing Grade?

A national media outlet has ranked the 10 worst free agent signings. The Washington Commanders had the overall worst signing with the contract offered to Javon Kinlaw.

The 33rd Team ranked the 10 worst free agent contracts. Kinlaw's $45 million contract with $30 million in guarantees took home top honors.

"Kinlaw has missed a lot of time in the NFL, as he played just 24 games in the first three years of his career," Marcus Mosher said. "He has played all 17 games in each of the last two seasons, so hopefully, he is putting those injury concerns behind him."

Mosher gave Kinlaw credit for improving his pass rush the last two seasons, but said he is a below average run stuffer.

"Kinlaw has become a decent pass rusher, totaling eight sacks in the last two seasons," Mosher said. "But, he is a poor run defender and should be relied upon as a backup rather than a starter."

The Commanders released Jonathan Allen this offseason and they are looking to replace him with Kinlaw. Mosher said the comparison cannot be made as Kinlaw is a definite downgrade.

"Kinlaw is significantly younger, but he just isn't the same caliber of player," Mosher said. "Here's hoping that Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. know how to deploy him better than the 49ers or the Jets."

The Commanders should have used the money to pay Allen, who is a far superior player. The Minnesota Vikings signed Allen to a three-year, $51 million contract. Dollar for dollar, Allen is a better gamble.
