Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has outlined what benefit having running back Brian Robinson Jr. in the offense could do for his unit.
The Washington Commanders' much-vaunted run game could get a boost with running back Brian Robinson Jr. pushing to return from a knee injury against the Carolina Panthers.
Having missed last week's 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Robinson Jr. has been back on the practice field this week in the hopes of again being part of a rushing attack that, through six weeks, is one of the best in football (157.3 yards per game).
For offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, having Robinson Jr. back in the rotation with Austin Ekeler would be a big lift for the offense.
“He's a big part of what we do, both emotionally and physically," Kingsbury said. "The way he plays the game, the joy he plays with, what he brings to practice, that's a big deal for us as a unit. Obviously, he's a tremendous player, pass game, running game, pass pro, so it would be a big lift.”
Robinson Jr. has been a little up and down through his five games this season, having two outings of 100+ rushing yards, but also three of 40 yards or under.
Still, he leads the Commanders in rush yards (325) and rushing touchdowns (five) from his 73 carries, so it's easy to understand why Kingsbury is so eager to get him back into the rotation.
While there might be thought to rush him back, the Commanders are in an advantageous position, being 4-2 and playing a team that could be considered "less than" in the lowly Panthers.
However, head coach Dan Quinn stated his team isn't overlooking Dave Canales' team, despite their 1-5 record, so if Robinson Jr. is good to go, he will likely suit up.
And in the process, give the Commanders a big lift.
