Most of David Andrews’ football leadership to date took place in New England, but the two-time Super Bowl champion recently had the opportunity to mentor in a new setting.
Andrews spent Tuesday in Chapel Hill, where he spoke to the North Carolina football team. The veteran center, of course, was invited by Bill Belichick, who signed Andrews as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and watched him become one of the most respected Patriots of this century.
Before Andrews stood in front of the Tar Heels, he received a warm introduction from his former head coach.
“Ten years in the league, undrafted player,” Belichick said. “Eight-time team captain as a free agent. All-decade player and multiple Super Bowls for an undrafted player. Now, it didn’t happen in one day. It didn’t happen in one year. It was day after day after day after week after week after month after month after year after year — stacking those together.”
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Andrews in the wake of his Patriots release. But if the 32-year-old decides to call an end to his playing days, he seems like a natural to step into the coaching space.
