Why The Detroit Lions Will Not Wear Black Uniforms vs. Commanders

The Detroit Lions' black jerseys are a fan favorite. Sleek, stylish, and bold, they’ve earned a reputation for adding some extra flair to the team's look. But despite their popularity, fans won't get to see the Lions don their black uniforms during the upcoming Divisional Round playoff game against the Washington Commanders.

Playoff Uniform Rules

So why aren’t the Lions wearing their black jerseys for this important postseason game? It comes down to a simple rule from the NFL: teams are not allowed to wear their alternate uniforms in the playoffs. According to the NFL’s game operations manual, postseason uniform designations must consist of a team’s primary jersey color (either their team color or white) and primary pant color.

The Blueberry Combo Expected

For the Lions, that means they will either wear their traditional home uniform combination (blue jersey and silver pants) or their “Blueberries” — the all-blue jersey and pant combo that has also become a fan favorite.

Given the playoff setting and the desire to maintain a clean and consistent look for the postseason, it’s widely expected that the Lions will go with their “Blueberries” for Saturday's clash against the Commanders.

While the black jerseys might be out for this game, the Lions are ready to take on the playoffs with style — and hopefully, a win — in their classic blue gear.
