This week’s episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon puts numerous characters in serious, mortal danger. That’s nothing new for the franchise, of course. One of the main thrusts of the TWD Universe is that anyone can die, at any point. But after the events of “The Book of Carol: L’Invisible” it sure looks like Isabelle (Clémence Poésy) is gonna die, huh?
Spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Season 2, Episode 3, “The Book of Carol: L’Invisible” past this point.
Let’s get this out of the way… The stinger for the episode is that Carol (Melissa McBride) is lined up with members of the Pouvoir des Vivants. She’s about to be executed by Marion Genet (Anne Charrier) and turned into a zombie super-soldier. Carol is not going to die, of course. Even if she wasn’t already a star of the franchise, we’ve seen her on set on the currently filming third season of the series. So, Carol is fine. How she gets out of that mess? TBD, we’ll see you next week!
Isabelle, on the other hand, is in serious mortal danger, and there are several reasons why. There are the obvious ones, of course. She’s lost her faith in the Union de L’Espoir and their mission to prove Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) is the savior of the human race by letting a zombie bite him. Consequently, she’s turned against the Union’s leader, Losang (Joel de la Fuente) and he’s taking her to what seems like her death at the end of the episode.
But there are bigger plot indicators for why Isabelle might be, to use the French, morte sooner rather than later. Back in the season’s second episode, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Isabelle kissed. That was the first time in 14 years of the show that Daryl ever kissed a woman, and it certainly amps up the feelings between the two. Then in this week’s episode, despite the connection the two share when they’re being held prisoner by Losang, Isabelle says “Je t’aime” to Daryl. It’s possible he doesn’t know that’s French for “I love you,” but he also says nothing back. Le ouch.
Daryl has feelings for Isabelle and strong ones at that. But there’s every indication that Isabelle feels stronger about Daryl than he feels about her, which generally leads to a heroic sacrifice of some sort. I could see a situation where Isabelle says it’s okay to let her go, because Daryl’s friend Carol has arrived.
There are also logistical reasons to think Isabelle won’t make it: thus far she hasn’t been announced for the Season 3 cast. Granted, neither has a lot of the French characters, as the action is transferring over to Spain. So maybe Isabelle stays with Laurent to keep him safe. But I would suggest more likely is Isabelle dying to save Daryl from Genet’s army. And perhaps the most gruesome possibility here is that Laurent gets bit and turns, proving that the Union’s faith was built on nothing.
So will Isabelle — and perhaps Laurent — die by season’s end? We’ve got three episodes to go, so stay tuned. We’ll find out soon enough just how Isabelle says “Au revoir.”
