The Green Bay Packers are rightfully optimistic that this is a team that can make headway in the NFC North.
After all, quarterback Jordan Love has another year of experience in Matt LaFleur’s system, Matthew Golden arrives as a potentially game-changing rookie receiver with game-altering speed, and coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense has a second year of continuity to build on the foundation of a stellar 2024 campaign.
However, it isn’t difficult to envision at least one of those pillars of optimism not playing out that way in 2025, which could have dire consequences for the Packers’ outlook this upcoming season.
Beyond the fact that the Detroit Lions still boast one of the most complete and talented rosters in the sport, and that the Chicago Bears figure to improve dramatically in Caleb Williams’ second season, and first under new head coach Ben Johnson, the Packers have legitimate questions to answer this upcoming season.
NFL Media’s Kevin Patra suggests that the Packers’ offense failing to live up to expectations, or make progress on the past two seasons, could be Green Bay’s undoing in 2025.
“What if Love is just a mid-level starter?” Patra wanders, about Green Bay. “I tend to believe his flashes suggest he has another level to his game, but until he silences the critics with a deep postseason run, he’ll forever be compared unfavorably to Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre. Those are the perils of following two greats in Green Bay. If Love gets injured again or devolves into a chuck-it-up INT machine, the Packers’ shot at the division will go out the window once again.
“If Golden doesn’t perform like a WR1, the Packers will be right back in the same boat they were in a year ago, with a cavalcade of good-but-not-great receivers surrounding Love. Without a field-tilting receiver, Green Bay’s offense can be slowed. There are also questions about whether the offensive line shifts will work with Elgton Jenkins moving to center after the Packers paid a significant amount for Aaron Banks in free agency.”
Much of the Packers’ outlook centers on Love, who took a bit of a step back last season while dealing with nagging foot injuries, but still passed for 3,389 yards with 25 touchdowns to 11 interceptions in his second season as Green Bay’s starter.
Still, it if the Packers are going to avoid regressing for the second consecutive season, after falling in the NFC Wild Card Round last year, Love is going to need to prove he’s capable of maximizing the weapons around him and cementing his status as one of the premier quarterbacks in the league. Green Bay’s championship hopes might depend on it.
