The Yankees have a blockbuster trade deal “on the table,” according to one of the team’s radio broadcasters.
Spanish language announcer Rickie Ricardo said on “Que Pasa MLB” that there is “a proposal on the table” for the Yankees to deal five prospects -- “not [George] Lombard [Jr.], not [Spencer] Jones” but “including [Cam] Schlittler to the Diamondbacks for Merrill Kelly, Eugenio Suarez, and Jalen Beeks.” The YouTube clip was translated from Spanish to English by Ryan Garcia, a Yankees blogger.
The trade deadline is at 6 p.m. ET on July 31.
The deal, if consummated, would give the Yankees a starting pitcher, a bullpen arm and a power-hitting third baseman, a position at which they are desperately in need.
Kelly, a 36-year-old right-hander, is 9-5 with a 3.32 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and 118 strikeouts this season.
Suarez, 34, is batting .257 with 35 homers, third in MLB behind Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge, and an MLB-best 85 RBIs.
Beeks, 32, is a left-hander with a 4.19 ERA and one save this season.
The proposed trade would not mean giving up either Lombard or Jones, but would require dealing Schlittler, who struck out seven in his Yankees debut and is scheduled to start Tuesday in Toronto.
