The New York Yankees have made several roster additions after losing outfielder Juan Soto to the New York Mets on a record-breaking $765 million deal. Is general manager Brian Cashman eyeing third baseman Alex Bregman as his final big splash of the winter?
YES Network's Jack Curry has made it clear the Bombers aren't actively pursuing the two-time World Series champion. However, the Yankees were linked to Bregman in the rumor mill consistently earlier in the offseason. Cashman might change course and pursue the right-handed slugger again if he continues to linger on the open market.
If the Bombers decide to make another push for Bregman, will they get beat out by the Houston Astros? That's what NorthJersey.com's Pete Caldera is predicting will happen.
"Before a March 1 exhibition game against Houston at Steinbrenner Field, word circulates that third baseman Alex Bregman has re-signed with the Astros on a $175 million deal," Caldera predicted.
Since the Yankees aren't currently considering Bregman as a realistic target, this wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for New York. Cashman and his front office must decide how the club will replace the recently departed Gleyber Torres in the infield, though.
One of the current internal options is veteran DJ LeMahieu. He'll reportedly get another chance to prove he can contribute consistently. However, the 36-year-old is coming off an injury-shortened and unproductive 2024 campaign. He hit .204/.269/.259 with just seven extra-base hits (five doubles and two home runs) in 228 plate appearances.
For a team with championship aspirations like the Yankees, they'll need to have another viable backup plan in place if LeMahieu doesn't prove he can return to form during spring training.
