Yankees Prospect Turns Heads With Massive Spring Training Home Run

Barring a plethora of injuries or unprecedented disasters, the New York Yankees may not see outfield prospect Spencer Jones in the big leagues this season.

Jones isn't letting that reality keep him from leaving an impression at Yankees camp.

Jones, a consensus top-5 prospect in the Yankees' system, smashed an opposite-field home run Saturday. The two-run blast marked the second straight year Jones began spring training with a homer.

"I feel like when I'm in the right position to hit," Jones told reporters, according to theNew York Post, "I have a great eye and that's what I'm working on."

Oppo power on display today

Why talk about the Yankees' 6-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays when we can discuss Jones' mammoth home run? The 6-foot-6, 235-pound Jones possesses plenty of power, mashing 17 home runs in 122 games at Double-A Somerset last season.

The massive round-tripper certainly impressed Yankees fans.

"Dude is powerful cuz on the replay he didn't even hit the bat square on the ball," one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote. "Gotta find him a spot in the field though! "

"Biggest HR of the day!!" commented WFAN (New York) host Chris McMonigle.

Some suggested the Yankees start Spencer at designated hitter. Longtime DH Giancarlo Stanton is questionable for Opening Day with discomfort in both elbows.

"Spencer Jones gonna force the Yankees to play him this season now that Stanton is hurt again," one Yankees fan chimed in.

It is unclear if Jones will open the season at Double-A or Triple-A. However, if he improves his plate discipline and continues showing off this kind of power, it won't be long before he's crushing homers in the majors.
