The New York Yankees sure have made a meal out of helping out the Boston Red Sox, their chief rival, at every turn these past few years, huh? A shrewd executive should never let a rivalry get in the way of a trade they believe they can win. But the same shrewd executive should definitely let a rivalry get in the way of a bad trade they're about to gag on.
They should also, uh, maybe stop believing they can win these trades so often? When it comes to the Yankees and Sox, New York has come up short every time since Adam Ottavino switched sides.
According to Joel Sherman's latest, another nonsensical whopper could be in the works ahead of the trade deadline.
Despite dealing for Ryan McMahon (third base) and Amed Rosario (third base complement against lefties), the Yankees are apparently still interested in adding an offensive player who could more easily spell Anthony Volpe at shortstop.
That could be Willi Castro. It could be any number of Tampa Bay Rays, from Jose Caballero to Taylor Walls. It could also be David Hamilton of the Boston Red Sox, apparently, who Craig Breslow is probably begging for someone to clear right about now so they can elevate Kristian Campbell/Vaughn Grissom.

Yankees Rumors: NYY interested in David Hamilton of the Boston Red Sox and his 40 OPS+
Conspiracy theory that Amed Rosario isn't shaving his gigantic beard because he knows he could be DFA'd after five games like he was with the Dodgers last year ... confirmed?
The Yankees don't have much additional roster maneuvering to do when Aaron Judge returns, other than operating one pitcher short. Oswald Peraza would go immediately if another bat were to arrive, but beyond that, it's murky.
Hamilton, worth 2.6 bWAR last year, but stuck in hell this year with a .505 OPS and deficient defense, would not be a reason to make such a roster mess. He's also a lefty hitter when Sherman's report makes it clear the Yankees are technically prioritizing a righty.
On the bright side, though, any Hamilton trade would give us a clearer picture of who the next Carlos Narvaez will be! Or the next Garrett Whitlock. Or Richard Fitts. Or Greg Weissert.
