49ers Could Be Botching George Kittle Contract Extension

The San Francisco 49ers could be screwing up something that should've been very simple.

The San Francisco 49ers are focused on the upcoming NFL Draft that begins on Thursday and extends through Saturday.

But there are current players whose contracts need attention, too. The obvious one is quarterback Brock Purdy, who enters the final year of his rookie deal.

But tight end George Kittle is also an important piece of the offense, and is also entering the final season of his five-year, $75 million deal signed back in August 2020.

There have been reports that general manager John Lynch and the team have already begun preliminary discussions with Purdy, but what about Kittle?

Kittle had a great 2024 season for a team that had very little go right during a miserable 6-11 campaign and earned All-Pro honors.

Per The Athletic's Mike Silver, Kittle and the 49ers are "far apart" in discussions for a new deal.

"Warner and the 49ers have yet to have any substantive talks about a possible extension, but the veteran team leader is likely to report," Silver posted on X. "Kittle, heading into the final year of a five-year, $75-million deal, is much more of a longshot, as he and the 49ers remain far apart in discussions about a new deal."

Another player who needs to be extended is star linebacker Fred Warner. Discussions have not begun with him, either.

I hope the 49ers have a plan in place for Purdy, Kittle and Warner, because if they don't, that 6-11 mark last season could be a high point for the team over the next few years.
