As usual, the Dallas Cowboys are a mess. Not only were they a mediocre team last season, but their rival Eagles won the Super Bowl, and the Commanders had rookie Jayden Daniels carry Washington to their best season since 1991. The Cowboys’ window appears to be closing, with Dak Prescott getting older and more expensive, and a roster that has significantly deteriorated over the past couple of seasons. On top of the recent struggles, Dallas has had issues reaching a contract extension with their star pass rusher, Micah Parsons, leading to speculation that he wants out.
Micah Parsons Trade Request
This past Friday, Parsons officially posted a statement indicating he wants to be traded.
“I stayed quiet, but again, after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision, I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys,” he wrote. “My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally.”
With this situation playing out into August, it’s time to take notice that there’s an actual chance Parsons’ days in Dallas are over. He’s going to get a massive payday wherever he ends up, and the Cowboys have made some serious financial investments over the past few seasons. They currently have $31.9 million available in cap space, and just $7.7 million set to be available in 2026. It wouldn’t be out of left field if the Cowboys traded him away.
Why Micah Parsons Fits with the 49ers
With the rumors heating up, the Niners were listed with the fifth-best odds to land the pass rusher at +1600, via DraftKings. If we’re being honest, the star passer would fit on any team. But, for the 49ers specifically, he’d be a godsend. The 49ers drafted defensive end Mykel Williams in the first round this Spring, as well as interior defensive lineman Alfred Collins and CJ West in the second and third rounds. Of course, they still have superstar Nick Bosa, but the 49ers need more talent in their defensive front.
Another reason San Francisco makes a lot of sense is that they can afford to pay the former Penn State star. Despite paying Brock Purdy, Fred Warner, and George Kittle this past offseason, the franchise has $47.6 million available in cap space and $43.9 million set for next year.
While the front office decided to part ways and do a bit of a reset this past season, there’s no doubt Micah Parsons would be someone they’d break the bank on.
Why the Cowboys Won’t Trade Him
Now, for the unfortunate part of all these rumors: Parson isn’t going anywhere. Well, at least there’s an extremely small chance of it. Jerry Jones has already downplayed the star’s request to be moved.
“I think the world of Micah,” Jones said after Saturday’s practice. “And that [request] is just a part of negotiation.”
He’s not wrong. Plus, the Cowboys would be foolish to trade Parsons away, especially within the conference. A similar trade that happened recently was when the Raiders traded Khalil Mack to the Bears, and well, that didn’t go well for the Black and Silver.
If “America’s Team” moved the superstar, they would be obliterated in the media. And rightfully so. If they traded him, the franchise would see a hefty return, but the problem is that they’d just be trying to replace his production with the draft capital they’d receive.
So, sorry to burst your bubble, football fans, but there’s a slim-to-none chance that the Cowboys honor Micah Parsons’ trade request. It just doesn’t make sense for Dallas.
