Whether the San Francisco 49ers want to pay quarterback Brock Purdy or not, the organization will have their starting quarterback for the 2025 season.
What happens beyond this season, though, is more of a mystery.
And the 2025 Draft could provide some semblance of craziness in that part.
As things stand right now, the expectation is that three quarterbacks - Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, and Jaxson Dart - will all be first-round selections later this month. While Ward's status as the first overall pick appears to be locked in, there is debate on where Sanders, the favorite to be the second quarterback taken, will be selected.
Some mocks even have the Colorado quarterback falling as far down as the seventh overall pick.
Should that happen, could the 49ers - who presently pick at No. 11 - reset their rookie quarterback contract window with a so-called "pure pocket passer'' in the lightning rod Sanders?
After his strong Pro Day, it's not exactly hard to see why that could happen. Even after executives spoke to FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz about his performance.
“I just think he throws a really catchable ball. Accuracy is one thing, but catch-ability is another. Shedeur’s got both. And watching him live today, there was more power — more velocity — than I expected,” the executive told Schultz. “He’s definitely a pocket guy, but athletic enough to buy time and make plays. His offensive line was always an issue in college, but turnovers never were.”
San Francisco would essentially be betting on head coach Kyle Shanahan to continue creating an offensive philosophy that would get the most out of pocket passers.
And with Purdy essentially about to be a far more expensive quarterback, the 49ers could look to try and get cheaper at the quarterback position moving forward.
