49ers surprisingly release training camp standout as part of latest roster moves

Hopefully, this one shocking roster move doesn't come back to bite the 49ers.

49ers TE George Kittle dubs undrafted WR Isaiah Neyor 'a freak'

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch was awfully active the Monday before his team's first preseason game of 2025 against the Denver Broncos.

The business included a swarm of roster moves, arguably headlined by the declaration of kicker Jake Moody as the winner of a high-profile competition against the offseason addition, Greg Joseph.

Joseph was just one of several players either released or waived by Lynch and Co. on Monday, but the veteran specialist wasn't the only surprise cut.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was the Niners waiving undrafted rookie wide receiver Isaiah Neyor.

Isaiah Neyor's release could come back to haunt 49ers

Neyor made it onto Niner Noise's in-camp 53-man roster prediction and for good reason. Not only was the 6-foot-4 receiver an offseason standout, who even caught the eye of All-Pro tight end George Kittle. But it appeared as the former Nebraska undrafted free agent was performing well in training camp in light of several injuries at the position.

While Neyor still had a long way to go to assert himself on the depth chart, particularly with knowledge that Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings were essentially cemented in on the top three spots at some point in 2025, it would be hard to at least deny the rookie a spot.

Well, that's precisely what San Francisco did.

The 49ers onboarded veteran wide receiver Robbie Chosen, who seems to be taking over Neyor's spot on the camp depth chart. That's a bit of a shocker, but perhaps there was something the Niners observed with the rookie they didn't like.

Additionally, albeit less shocking, San Francisco waiving second-year quarterback Tanner Mordecai in light of signing quarterback Carter Bradley, the son of 49ers defensive assistant Gus Bradley.

Nepotism aside, signs were pointing to Mordecai struggling in camp anyway, suggesting there'll be the slight changeup to the quarterbacking depth chart once the regular season hits.

Still, Neyor's departure is quite a shocker, and one can only hope another team won't sign the receiver and turn him into a quality player.
