8 Walking Dead Plot Points To Remember Before Watching Daryl Dixon

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is an intriguing standalone spin-off of the original series, which can be jumped into without more than a little bit of background knowledge of its titular protagonist. Daryl Dixon is one of the most popular characters to come out of AMC's original apocalypse on The Walking Dead by far, winning over herds of fans with his gruff exterior, tender demeanor, and signature crossbow skills. Of the many The Walking Dead spin-off series, Daryl's dedicated show just might be the most accessible.

8 Walking Dead Plot Points To Remember Before Watching Daryl Dixon

With the third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon releasing soon in 2025, it's as good a time as ever to get caught up on the existing two seasons. Luckily, watching all 11 seasons of The Walking Dead isn't necessary to soak up all the background information required to enjoy the relatively disconnected and isolated story of Daryl's solo series. With just a few key reminders and pointers about Daryl's character and his past, anyone can get into The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon without much trouble.

8Daryl Dixon Left Alexandria During The Walking Dead's Ending

Daryl was never one to stay in one place for too long

Carol and Daryl at Alexandria in The Walking Dead

The closest thing the world of AMC's The Walking Dead has had to a proper safe society since the collapse of the zombie apocalypse is the Alexandria Safe-Zone. A walled community located in Alexandria, Virginia, the former quarantine zone was retrofitted by a founding visionary couple to be the start of civilization's rebirth, at least in the United States. While other "safe" communities have existed, none have been as prosperous, stable, or free of wanton violence or despicable cult-like leaders as Alexandria.

Having been on the lam for so long as a lone survivalist even before the zombie outbreak, Daryl Dixon quickly felt out-of-place in the safe walls of Alexandria, though he soon became a proficient recruiter for the community. However, by the end of the original series, Daryl is once again feeling the pull of the wild call to him. Bidding a tearful goodbye to his loved ones, Daryl sets out on his motorcycle to start a new adventure, setting up for the first episodes of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

7Daryl Spent A Long Time Searching For Rick Grimes

Rick continues to be an important influence in Daryl's life

For a majority of the series, Daryl served Rick's group as his right-hand man. After Rick's supposed death, Daryl had trouble accepting the news, being one of the survivors to refuse to believe Rick was really gone. Daryl ended up spending years in the woods searching for Rick's body, only to become shaggier and more isolated, with only Leah and Dog for company. Ostensibly, Daryl's latest journey from Alexandria was another search for his beloved former leader and friend.

Little would Daryl know that his instincts were right on the money, with Rick actually being captured and taken to Philadelphia as described in the events of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. This makes it all the more tragic that Daryl simply refused to give up hope that his friend could be out there, only to be taken far away from him at the start of his own show. Word of Rick's survival has yet to reach Daryl in The Walking Dead's sprawling timeline.

6Daryl Had Never Left Georgia Before Season 5

Daryl isn't the most worldly individual around

To say that Daryl Dixon had a homely upbringing would be putting it lightly. After suffering from abuse at the hands of his father, Daryl set out with his brother Merle, living off of the land in the Appalachian Mountains of Northern Georgia. Daryl would eventually help his brother in the drug trade, but during his entire pre-apocalypse life, Daryl never had the chance to go further than the bounds of the state he was born in. Daryl admits as much in season 5 when his travels take him outside the bounds of his home state for the first time.

Daryl's Southern accent doesn't always necessarily imply a poorly-traveled person, but in the scruffy motorcyclist's case, it's certainly true. This makes calling his sudden adventure to France in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon an understatement, to say the least. Daryl certainly takes the culture of the American South with him everywhere he goes, even to the rest of The Walking Dead's apocalyptic world. His lack of worldliness certainly comes up more than once in the series.

5Zombie Variants Exist In The Walking Dead

An important plot point in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

Walking dead Zombie variants Daryl spinoff

For the most part, the "Walkers" of The Walking Dead exhibit all the same traits of the classic George Romero-style zombies of old. Shuffling, living corpses, walkers typically only have rudimentary intelligence, driven by sheer instinct implanted on their midbrains from the Wildfire Virus. The virus lies dormant in infected victims until the point of death, upon which it takes over, piloting a shambling corpse that can only be truly killed by destroying the brain. The Walkers aren't especially fast or strong, nor can they navigate complex solutions or employ fine motor skills.

However, as The Walking Dead progressed, more and more Walker variants slowly began to rear their ugly heads. Lurkers lie dormant in a near-death state until being activated by nearby stimulus, resulting in a devious trap, while Roamers exhibit unusual behavior, exploring locations, people, or objects known to them in life. Most terrifyingly of all are the Climbers, which can climb surfaces, open doors, and solve simple puzzles in pursuit of food. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon gets heavy mileage out of the concept of variant Walkers.

4Daryl Is An Expert Survivalist And Hunter

There's a reason Daryl has made it so far

Daryl with a crossbow in The Walking Dead

Time and time again, Daryl Dixon is able to prove himself as one of the most capable (and perhaps, the single most capable) person in Rick's entire entourage in The Walking Dead. As previously stated, Daryl grew up with the wilderness of Northern Georgia as his backyard, spending extended periods of time outdoors ever since he was a kid. As a result, Daryl is particularly well-suited to the difficulties of the zombie apocalypse in a way few other survivors can ever hope to match.

Daryl's survival skills make him a valuable addition to any group, giving him a very clear value as someone who can pull his own weight. His use of a crossbow is also quite striking, as one villain in The Walking Dead remarks that wielding a bow is always the mark of a survivalist, even before the apocalypse. It's not just for show, either, as Daryl's hunting skills have been put to extremely effective use on animals, zombies, and most chillingly of all, other people.

3Daryl Was The Leader Of The Multiple Groups

Many have looked to Daryl for guidance in the apocalypse

In many instances, Daryl's survival skills have put him in the position to be a leader. For a time, Daryl acted as the leader of the Saviors after their previous one, the most devilish and infamous of The Walking Dead's villains, Negan, was dispatched. Though Daryl himself isn't the biggest fan of this charge, passing the title on the Carol later, he undeniably excels as a point of inspiration and person of guidance to look to. However much of a lone wolf he may be, Daryl is shockingly good in a leadership position.

For a time, Daryl was even the leader of a group all his own, simply referred to as Daryl's Group. In the little-known first-person shooter spin-off video game, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, Daryl leads a band of survivors consisting of his immediate family, taking precedence for the role over his brother despite being the younger sibling. This penchant for leadership certainly comes into play in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, further exploring his growth as a character.

2Daryl Is Often A Protector And Father Figure

Don't be fooled by his gruff exterior

Daryl's scary exterior and general dislike of most people often makes him seem like an incompatible choice for a father figure. But those familiar with The Walking Dead will recognize that beneath his deer-skinning, zombie-killing surface beats the tender heart of a loving found family member. For the most part, Daryl utilizes his toughness and skill the weapons to be a protector for those who can't protect themselves, quietly building bonds with vulnerable people.

Daryl is especially good with children, almost startlingly so, likely remembering his own childhood and former vulnerability and using it as a means to ensure that those close to him are never taken advantage of in the same way. Daryl becomes something of an uncle figure to Rick's kids, R.J. and Judith, viewing them as surrogate nephews, and takes up a role as a protector for Lydia, the abandoned daughter of the insidious Whisperers' leadership. Daryl's ability to relate to and fierce need to protect kids persists well into The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

1Daryl Has Taken A Lover Before

The outcast survivalist is far from aromantic

Daryl And Leah The Walking Dead

At first glance, Daryl's general social awkwardness and difficulty with relating to other people around him may seem to preclude him from romantic relationships. Though his relationship with Carol was speculated to be romantic by fans for a long time, showrunners have since confirmed that Daryl and Carol are platonic, best friends with an extremely strong bond that bridges the gap between their gender and age. However, at one point in The Walking Dead, Daryl did indeed find himself with a genuine love interest.

Daryl's days roaming the woods searching for Rick's body introduced him to Leah, a troubled woman who would end up being a deadly member of the Reapers. The two end up sharing a brief romantic relationship that ultimately concludes with Daryl being forced to kill his former lover. Despite the trauma, it's nice to know that Daryl is at least able to form romantic connections of some kind, a plot point that's useful to bear in mind going in to The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
