Co-creator Neil Druckmann announced the highly anticipated second season during Sony’s press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. The seven-episode season jumps five years ahead, reuniting Joel and Ellie as they face both new threats and old tensions.

A new trailer, released alongside the CES announcement, offers a glimpse of the action—including desolate landscapes that may feel familiar to Canadian viewers.

While Season 2 filming shifted largely to British Columbia—covering locations in Kamloops, Mission, Fort Langley, and Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside—Alberta hasn’t disappeared from the series entirely.

Scenes shot in Calgary, Exshaw, and along Highway 1A contribute to the series’ signature wintry backdrop, capturing the bleak isolation that defines the show’s world.

The Alberta footprint is smaller than in Season 1, which used over 180 provincial locations—including Canmore and Fort Macleod—to create the show’s haunting post-pandemic landscapes. Still, Alberta remains a key player in shaping the series’ apocalyptic aesthetic.

Returning to their roles are Pedro Pascal (Joel), Bella Ramsey (Ellie), Gabriel Luna (Tommy), and Rutina Wesley (Maria). Season 2 also introduces Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Canadian legend Catherine O’Hara joins the cast as a guest star.

Season 2 remains under the creative direction of Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, with production led by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Naughty Dog.

With reports suggesting that The Last of Us could run for four seasons, Alberta fans are left to wonder: Will the province’s iconic landscapes play a role in the series’ final chapters?

Season 2 of The Last of Us premieres on HBO and Max this April.
