The New York Jets are looking to keep their playoff hopes alive on Thursday night against the Houston Texans. ... and will do so with a just-shuffled-through roster.
After beginning the season with high hopes, the Jets have lost five straight games and sit at the bottom of the AFC East. The recent trade for All-Pro receiver Davante Adams (not to mention the Robert Saleh firing) was supposed to invigorate things. That, of course, hasn't happened.
Now, hours before kickoff on "Thursday Night Football,'' more moves - nine of them, to be exact. To wit: New York has released tight end Anthony Firkser, placed defensive tackle Leki Fotu and receiver Allen Lazard on IR, signed lineman Alec Lindstrom and kicker Riley Patterson, elevated DBs Kendall Sheffield and Jarious Monroe, activated tight end Kenny Yeboah off IR to the active roster and signed end Takk McKinley to the practice squad.
Immediately most significant: The loss of Lazard and the selection of a kicker with failing Greg Zuerlein moving to IR.
The Jets ended up acquiring Adams just a week after firing Saleh, meaning that the team was desperate to make a move to jumpstart their offense after their struggles. However, since acquiring Adams, the offense has not looked much better. The offense has stalled despite the investment and commitment in QB Aaron Rodgers, who was pivotal in the move to get Adams ... and needs to be pivotal if New York is to get out of this rut, no matter how many moves the Jets make.
