Righty Cooper Criswell has been called up to be the 27th man on the Red Sox roster for Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Red Sox won Game 1, 19-5. First pitch of Game 2 is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
The 28-year-old Criswell has pitched well at Triple-A Worcester this season. He has a 1.99 ERA (22 ⅔ innings, five earned runs) and 0.97 WHIP. He has posted a 34.8% strikeout percentage (31 strikeouts, 89 batters faced) and opponents have batted just .185 against him.
Criswell appeared in 26 games and made 18 starts for Boston last year, posting a 4.08 ERA. But he has been limited to just 4 ⅓ innings (five earned runs) and three outings in the big leagues this season.
Starter Brayan Bello failed to reach the fifth inning in Game 1. Lucas Giolito, who will start Game 2, has made four starts. He has pitched 4 or fewer innings in two of those three starts.
