Brock Purdy has stayed silent about the Deebo Samuel trade until now.
The San Francisco 49ers‘ franchise quarterback finally spoke publicly about the team’s deal with the Washington Commanders that landed Samuel in our nation’s capital on the latest “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast, and he’s not happy about it.
Samuel had alternated productive seasons with less-dynamic campaigns over the past four seasons, and San Francisco dealt the wide receiver to Washington for a fifth-round pick that it used to select running back Jordan James from Oregon.
Samuel, who the Niners picked 36th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, had 806 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns last year.
What Did Brock Purdy Say About The Deebo Samuel Trade?
Purdy expressed his sadness in the Niners trading Samuel.
“He’s my boy,” Purdy said. “I love Deebo. [Since] Day 1, he’s always had my back.”
Purdy recalled how Samuel was one of the first 49ers to support him when he was named the team’s starting quarterback midway into his rookie season. Purdy took over after Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending foot injury against the Miami Dolphins in 2022 and has not relinquished the starting-quarterback spot.
“I didn’t really know how the guys were going to take it when I got thrown in,” Purdy said. “Jimmy went down, and I was the last quarterback [on the roster], and Deebo was nothing but great for me, building me up and just giving me confidence.”
Samuel has been known as a high-energy, highly enthusiastic player on the field, and Purdy said his demeanor gave him a surge on the field.
“In games, we fed off each other’s energy and building each other up. It was awesome,” Purdy said. “We created a great relationship. He’s my brother.”
Samuel accounts for a whopping $34 million in dead cap space, even though he is just 29 years old. But his deal allowed the Niners to give Purdy the five-year, $265 million contract he received this off-season.
No surprise, Purdy offered well wishes to Samuel with the Commanders.
“I hope he goes to Washington and kills it,” Purdy said. “Any time you get Deebo the ball, you never know what could happen. He’s an explosive player, exciting to watch, and he’s got a lot of great ball ahead of him too.
“That’s just how this business goes.”
What Did Brock Purdy Say About Trent Williams?
Purdy may be sad to watch Samuel go, but he is ecstatic to still have veteran left tackle Trent Williams protecting his blind side.
“Year after year for me, as a right-handed quarterback, knowing my left side is good, … it’s like a sense of freedom,” Purdy said. “I absolutely love him. For me to be a quarterback in the NFL and have that guy blocking for me, it doesn’t get any better.”
Williams will turn 37 on July 19, and as he has gotten older, unsurprisingly he has become less durable. But Purdy described how Williams keeps him informed about how he is progressing when he gets banged up.
“He’s real with me,” Purdy said. “He’s like my safety blanket. I’m like ‘I need my binkie.'”
