Brock Purdy reveals his family booked tickets to his first NFL start before the season started just to watch Tom Brady

It has been a little over two years since the San Francisco 49ers were forced to rely on Brock Purdy as the team’s starting quarterback after starters Trey Lance and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo went down for the season due to their respective injuries. Since that point on, there has been no turning back for the team as Purdy made the most of his opportunity and established himself as a worthy starter for the team.

Brock Purdy‘s entire family was present in the Week 14 game of the 2022 season as the San Francisco 49ers happened to face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In a recent sit-down, the quarterback revealed that his family had booked tickets to the game before the season had commenced.

Was it because they hoped to see him start that weekend? Absolutely not. It was because they wanted to witness Tom Brady play!

Little did the Purdy family know that they were in for a treat, as it would also happen to be the week in which Mr. Irrelevant would be making his first start in the league.

The coaches, the organization, everybody are like, 'Can we roll with you for the rest of the year?' We're down to our third quarterback...the next thing you know, you got Tom Brady rolling in town and my family...booked their tickets before the season even started to stay and watch Tom! Brock Purdy said while appearing for 2024 Dwight Clark Legacy Series

This incident will go down as one of the happiest co-incidents of all time. Purdy’s family will never forget that week 14 game.

Brock Purdy beat Tom Brady in his first week as a starter for the 49ers

Despite being the last pick of his draft class, Purdy exuded confidence and played as well as he could. He shocked the world by defeating Tom Brady and the Buccaneers a 35-7 defeat. He quickly made history as he became the first rookie QB to accomplish this feat and handed the seven-time Super Bowl champion his third-largest loss in his entire career. Not bad for a rookie.

Purdy spoke on his mindset heading into that game.

For me, in the back of mind, it was like, I get one opportunity here, let's see what we can do with it. Brock Purdy added

He acknowledged the added pressure of having to go up against the greatest player to do it in his first game as a starter, but ultimately, he understood that he was up against the Buccaneers defense. Purdy fared well and from that point forward, there has been no turning back for him or the 49ers.

The quarterback topped his rookie year with yet another stellar performance this season. He came close to winning the MVP honors after throwing for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a league-best QBR of 72.8. The cherry on top was a trip to the Super Bowl.

Despite falling short to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, Purdy gave the 49ers’ fanbase and organization a sense of optimism about the future. It will be exciting to see how far the QB will lead this team this season.
