As a writer, teachers taught to never to write in the first person. They instructed never to do so or to write in the passive voice. However, as it turns out, Cleveland Browns fans tend to be more irritated than the worst Ravens, Broncos, or Raiders fans. I have changed all that for this article.
Gridiron Heroics hit new depths of that trademark Cleveland annoyance and arrogance. Browns fans were found laughing at the Steelers' decision to extend Mike Tomlin's contract.
Browns fans had the gall to weigh in on the decision made by Steelers ownership. While they shouldn't have, they did.
Why Browns fans got Mike Tomlin's Steelers extension wrong
When the Steelers decided to renew Mike Tomlin's contract, there was some controversy amongst Steelers fans—rightfully so. Steelers fans have a right to be critical, whether their head coach or other players are not cutting the mustard.
However, the Cleveland Browns fans decided to weigh in on the matter. Fans pointed out that Tomlin is the only coach in the AFC North without a win in the 2020s and that it has been 2703 days since the Steelers last won a playoff game.
It's ironic that the Browns fans, who have a history of poor performance, would criticize the Steelers. It's like the old proverb, 'those living in glass houses should not cast stones.' Yet, they choose to do so; I think it's time to give them a dose of their own medicine.
Since the Browns fans brought it up, it's only been 21,742 days since they last won an NFL championship in 1964. However, if that's not disparaging enough, since 1969, in that case, the Steelers have had three head coaches, and the Browns have had 21, including Even Bill Belichick stunk in Cleveland. I don't think Belichick drafted any 6th-round quarterbacks from Michigan while in Cleveland, either. Of course with Cleveland's revolving door of starting quarterbacks since 1999, it's hard to tell.
However, let's look at another daunting fact. Since 1970, the Cleveland Browns have been a stellar 7-47 in Pittsburgh and an astounding 22-24-1 at home against the Steelers. In the Ben Roethlisberger era, the Browns have an amazing 5-30-1 record against the Steelers.
The Browns can laugh about Tomlin's playoff drought all they want, but the fact remains that he has coached in two Super Bowls and won one of them. The Browns, on the other hand, have never appeared in a Super Bowl. They have the audacity to laugh at a coach who, despite a playoff drought, has never had a losing season and a regular season record of 173-100-2.
In the same time frame, since 2007, the Browns have had 14 losing seasons and went 0-16 in 2017.
Fans will bring up punking the Steelers in the 2020 playoffs. That's rich coming from a team that had not won a playoff game since 1994, a span of only 26 seasons or 9506 days.
However, don't take my word on the Cleveland Browns. I think Sam Wyche's mid-game speech back in 1989 sums them up very well. However, thanks to that dandy contract the Browns gave Deshaun Watson, don't expect any Cleveland championships in the near future either.
