Interim Bruins coach Joe Sacco thought Jake DeBrusk’s goal was coming off the board in his team’s 2-0 loss to Vancouver on Monday at TD Garden.
After the former Boston forward tapped the puck behind Jeremy Swayman early in the second for the game’s first goal, Sacco used his replay challenge.
Conor Garland looked like he was trying to twist out of the way of Quinn Hughes’ shot from the point, but the puck appeared to hit his glove in front of the net and caromed to DeBrusk.
Sacco asked for a hand pass review.
“I was (confident) just because of what happened in the past. I remember a play where it hit one of our guys gloves and one of our players didn’t move his hand at all and they called it,” Sacco said. “When I looked at it, it hit Garland in front of the net. It hit his hand and went right to the eventual goal scorer. So I was confident. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have made the call.”
The officials disagreed. The Canucks got a goal, the game’s only one until Garland’s empty netter. The Bruins were assessed a delay of game penalty and never produced a tying goal.
DeBrusk thought it was going to be called back, but for a high stick.
“I didn’t know if it was actually gonna be disallowed,” DeBrusk said. “I thought it was high. But I mean, I wasn’t gonna not put it in. It was just a lucky bounce. In years past here I got those disallowed. So it’s funny how things work out.”
