Stability in the front office is a very underrated weapon for teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a secret weapon. That weapon is the key reason for their consistent dominance in the NFC South.
It is no easy feat to field a team that has been a perennial playoff contender with two different coaches and quarterbacks over the last five years. Tampa Bay has been able to do so thanks to the skill of general manager Jason Licht.
Licht is Tampa Bay's secret weapon.
The 54-year-old has been the Buccaneers' general manager since 2014. Since his hiring, Tampa Bay has won a Super Bowl, reached the playoffs multiple times, and has grown into a true power in the NFC.
As of this week, Licht was rewarded for his efforts with a long-term extension by the organization.
"I am very grateful to the Glazer Family for the trust and belief they have shown in what we are doing here," Licht said in a team statement. "I am also very excited to continue working alongside Todd well into the future as we continue our mission of finding and developing talented players and chasing additional championships for our fans."
Licht has drafted some of the best players in Tampa Bay football history. From a future Hall-of-Famer in Mike Evans to All-Pro talents like Vita Vea or Antoine Winfield Jr., Licht has had a strong eye for building the team through the draft.
He is also not afraid to make aggressive moves in trades.
Baker Mayfield, Coach Todd Bowles, and the rest of the Buccaneers' roster are big reasons why the team remains a title contender.
Building a team that has been as consistent as it has been with as many changes as it has gone through, though, is a mark of how important Licht is to the organization's present and future.
