Chiefs Announce Major Coaching Staff Change

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the greatest NFL teams of the moment, so it’s somewhat surprising when a staffer suddenly retires, especially if that retirement is unexpected. But, the team is constantly changing, so staffers coming and going is an inevitable part of the process.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach

Even though the Chiefs didn’t get their dream of a three-peat last season, the team has largely gone into the 2025 season with the same coaching staff, give or take a few. Head coach Andy Reid has made some minor changes, but nothing too crazy, so hopefully it’s the kind of team that can lead the Chiefs back to yet another Super Bowl to anger all the people who want to see their reign stopped.

Now the Chiefs have announced that they’re making a staffing change going into the new season. A five-year coach is leaving, and even if he’s not the biggest name, he was important behind the scenes.

Kansas City Chiefs Coach Says Farewell

On Wednesday, June 11, the Chiefs took to social media to say farewell to one of their own. They announced that after five years, two Super Bowl wins and four Super Bowl appearances with the Chiefs, special teams coach Andy Hill is retiring.

“Thank you for helping us make our special teams extra special, Coach Hill,” the Chiefs stated. “Congratulations on a well-earned retirement.”

A few followers chimed in with their congratulations, one stating, “Andy was the high school football star in Trenton when I was in elementary school there. So proud of all you’ve accomplished! Congrats and happy retirement, coach.” Another added, “Helped make Tommy Townsend one of the best in the business. Happy Retirement, Coach.”

Hill was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 and helped bring the team to those aforementioned four Super Bowl appearances and two wins. He has also been working under Dave Toub the whole time, so he’s had a significant part in the development of special teams. Before coming to the Chiefs, he worked in Missouri and was inducted into the state’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Which Kansas City Chiefs Coach Is Stepping Up

So, what’s next? Reid has been promoting from within a lot, and that trend will continue. According to Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest, “With Andy Hill’s retirement, Porter Ellett has moved to assistant special teams coach for Dave Toub. Mark DeLeone, former linebackers coach for the Chiefs, returns to KC and takes over Ellett’s old role as assistant RB coach.”

DeLeone was with Kansas City from 2013 to 2015, where he was the defensive quality control coach, and then he moved to assistant linebackers coach in 2016 and eventually to inside linebackers coach in 2018. He most recently was with the Baltimore Ravens in the 2024 season.

“While his coaching career has taken him many places, he’ll hope to help take Kansas City back to the Super Bowl with a chance for another title this fall,” Chris Schad of FanSided’s KC Kingdom stated in a June 11 feature.

“The Chiefs are continuing their trend of promoting from within and working with coaches who they have familiarity with,” Nick Roesch of A to Z Sports notes. “Andy Reid has one of the biggest and most successful coaching trees in NFL history, which will keep making an impact around the league for the foreseeable future.”
