Chiefs Make Final Decision on Resting Patrick Mahomes and Starters in Week 18

Now at 15-1, the Chiefs are in the favorable position of being able to rest their star players in the Week 18 clash against the Denver Broncos beginning their postseason assault on the Super Bowl.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) gestures during the NFL Week 17 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, December 25, 2024 in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Kansas City Chiefs continued to roll after a 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC as a result.

Now at 15-1, the Chiefs are in the favorable position of being able to rest their star players in the Week 18 clash against the Denver Broncos beginning their postseason assault on the Super Bowl.

And after playing three games in 11 days, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and many of his peers will play zero games in the next 25 days

That’s the rumor being reported by PFT - that the Chiefs will rest key starters in their Week 18 game at Denver.

That has been the expectation from coach Andy Reid. … and it’s good news for both some of the banged-up KC guys (including Mahomes and his ankle).

It’s also good news for the Broncos, who will catch a break from their arch-rivals.

The Broncos need to win next Sunday to make it to the playoffs for the first time since Super Bowl 50.

Meanwhile, the news creates a problem for the Bengals, Colts, and Dolphins, who need Denver to lose for them to make the postseason.

Of course, “rest vs. rust” will be a debate among observers of the Chiefs.

But they are the No. 1 seed. They will set up camp at Arrowhead Stadium throughout the playoffs.

And the Chiefs - working toward a three-peat when it comes to winning the Super Bowl - have both earned the right to do as they please and to be trusted in their judgment.
