Chiefs Patrick Mahomes Details 'Calm Mindset' In Clutch Time

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the kings of winning close games this season and Patrick Mahomes has detailed how he can stay level-headed in high pressure moments.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been living life on the edge in 2024, and with their 12-1 record, 10 of those have been one-score games.

So the Chiefs don't do any favors to their fans with these close finishes, but what is most important is that they are still winning.

Some of that has been Patrick Mahomes driving the offense down into field goal range for a game-winning kick; other times, it's been the defense making plays, and the special teams unit has also played their role with a blocked punt against the Denver Broncos.

And Mahomes has a message for fans who are struggling with all the tight clutch-time finishes this season.

“When I'm not on the field, I'm nervous as well,” Mahomes said. “I have total confidence in our defense, but when it's out of your hands, it's hard to not be a little bit nervous. I think in the moment when I get opportunities, I just try to execute the game plan, execute the play that's in front of me, not worry about the entire drive, and then get us into position to score and win the game.

"Then allow my teammates to go out there and win it. So it's obviously a lot of experience has helped me keep a calm mindset in those moments but we continue to work and get better and just find ways to win, whatever way that is, we're good with it.”

For some, the Chiefs are "lucky" with these close finishes, and others believe that their "luck" will eventually run out at some point.

But for now, the Chiefs keep rolling to what looks to be another season in which they will be the AFC's No. 1 seed. However, Andy Reid's team still has four games left to navigate.

Mahomes says that the close games prepare the team for the playoffs, but it's certainly not easy on Chiefs Kingdom, who are on the edge of their seats every week.
