Chiefs Predicted to Cut Ties With 2nd Round WR Amid Troubles With Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs were hoping to add a major piece to their offense when they used a second-round pick on wide receiver Skyy Moore in 2022, but some insiders believe his time with the team will be cut short.

Moore has been something of a disappointment, offering unsteady production amid difficulties getting in sync with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Jesse Newell of the Kansas City Star noted that he is on the roster bubble heading into training camp, with others predicting he will not find a spot on the team’s final 53-man roster.

Skyy Moore in a Fight for His Job

As Newell noted, the wide receiver position is set to be one of the “biggest storylines” in training camp, with Nikko Remigio, Jason Brownlee, and Justyn Ross joining Moore on the roster bubble.

“Skyy Moore has looked good again this summer … but will Mahomes trust him after his previous history of drops and inconsistency?” Newell wrote.

Newell added that receiver Tyquan Thornton could be in line for one of the final roster spots due to his versatility.

“[Head coach Andy] Reid had some praise for Thornton a couple weeks ago, and the receiver has also worked as a gunner on special teams in recent practices, which could help his roster versatility,” Newell wrote. “It’s way too early to call the race at this position, but Thornton certainly has earned himself a long look.”

In what could be an ominous sign for Moore — and of his shaky connection to Mahomes — the Chiefs quarterback omitted his name when talking about the depth of the team’s wide receiving corps.

“I think it’s gonna come from everywhere,” Mahomes said of the team’s air attack. “Obviously, you’ve got Rashee being back. He looks great. You have Xavier Worthy, who came on so strong at the end of last year. You have Hollywood Brown healthy again. Guys everywhere. You add in Travis Kelce, a Hall of Famer. Noah Gray, a great tight end, and everybody that we’ve added to all those different rooms. We have so many weapons. Let’s go out there and just maximize it all. It’s not gonna be just one person. It’s gonna be the entire offense going out there and showcasing what the Kansas City Chiefs truly are.”

Tough Outlook for Skyy Moore

Dominic Minchella of SI.com shared a similar outlook for Moore, calling him the “odd man out” of the Chiefs’ wide receiving corps.

“Moore, a former second-round selection for the franchise, has yet to live up to the expectations,” Minchella wrote. “Through three seasons with Kansas City, Moore has played in 36 regular season games and has brought in 43 receptions and 494 receiving yards. He has also only scored a singular touchdown in his career.”

Moore had a dismal season in 2024, making zero receptions in six games played with just three total targets. Minchella noted that Moore’s relatively inexpensive rookie contract could be his saving grace.

“Being relatively inexpensive might be Moore’s saving grace in having a job come the beginning of the season,” Minchell wrote. “While he hasn’t lived up to the expectations, the Chiefs are still giving him a chance to prove himself and crack the 53-man roster for Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil.”
