Chiefs Reveal Update on Patrick Mahomes Key Protector

The Kansas City Chiefs' starters will have plenty of time off, as the team has already locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC with another week remaining in the regular-season.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) talks with team prior to the Week 16 NFL game against the Houston Texans on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

Not only will the two weeks off give Kansas City's starting unit some time to rest, but it will also give some injured players the opportunity to fully heal in time for the postseason. One of those injured players is Patrick Mahomes' starting left tackle D.J. Humphries.

Humphries has been dealing with a hamstring injury in recent weeks, but coach Andy Reid gave an optimistic report on him after practice on Monday.

"You know what, he's doing good," Reid said. "I can't make you any promises – I want to get him out to practice and kind of see where we're at. But he is doing good in his rehab part. That's different than being on the field. I'd like to just see how he does there."

With Humphries out, the Chiefs moved starting left guard Joe Thuney to left tackle, pushing Mike Caliendo into the starting unit. Reid also didn't rule out the possibility of keeping that lineup even when Humphries returns.

"I'm going to play it kind of by ear as we go here," Reid said. "I've been happy with Caliendo and how he's played, I've been happy with Joe and how he's played. I appreciate them jumping in and keeping the level of play up. I'm curious to see where D.J. is at and if he can do anything. I just want to see where we're at, and I'll evaluate that as we go down the stretch here."
