Commanders Deebo Samuel Coach Receives Second Project Player

A new Washington Commanders coach has been tasked with improving last year's third-round draft pick.

The Washington Commanders pulled off one of their biggest moves before the NFL Draft, back in March, when the team traded for San Francisco 49ers star wideout, Deebo Samuel.

Samuel's time out west was not without controversy, as he was often criticized for being out of shape in his later years with the franchise. So the Commanders also brought in Wes Welker, Samuel's position coach early in his tenure with the 49ers.

According to the Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala, Welker "will be a personnel analyst and work with both the personnel staff and coaching staff, per sources." Also, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows, Welker was in charge of monitoring Samuel's weight fluctuations in San Francisco, which became a major topic during his time there.

And now, there's another project for Welker in Washington - Luke McCaffrey.

Washington wasn't exactly happy with McCaffrey's performance in 2024 after selecting him with the No. 100 overall pick in the third round of the draft, and Welker could be just the guy to get him going in the offense.

The former Nebraska Cornhusker and Rice Owl caught just 18 passes for 168 yards in 17 games with four starts in his rookie season. He also saw action on kick returns, where he posted 299 yards on 10 returns.

Welker, at 5-9 and 185 pounds, made a career out of being an undersized pass catcher in the NFL with 903 catches for 9,924 yards and 50 touchdowns across 12 seasons with five teams.

McCaffrey is listed at 6-2, 198 pounds, but Welker's message should translate.
