Commanders Make Cut In Huge Final Roster Move

The Washington Commanders are signing veteran kicker Matt Gay to a one-year contract.

The Washington Commanders are signing veteran kicker Matt Guy to a one-year deal worth $4.35 million, with that number fully guaranteed

The deal could be worth as much as $5 million with incentives.

The signing is the largest one-year deal for a kicker, according to his agents David Canter and Ness Mugrabi. (But of course not the largest for kickers, with that number around $6 million APY.)

The deal was first announced on social media by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

In a corresponding move, the Commanders are releasing veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez. Gonzalez appeared in only six regular-season games for the Commanders  who had utilized several kickers.

Gay kicked last season for the Indianapolis Colts where he went 31-for-37 on field goals with a long of 56 yards. He was perfect on 33 PAT's.

He was released two weeks ago by the Colts, just two years into a four-year contract he signed with the team before the 2023 season. He had signed a four- year deal worth $22.5 million one year after he won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams. Gay made the Pro Bowl following the 2021 season.

Gay - involved in a huge decision here as DC has had a revolving door at this spot - battled injuries last season and was sidelined in the preseason with a sports hernia, which required surgery. He missed the first week of the season as a result. He has been known for his ability to make long kicks during his career. However, he struggled in that department with the Colts as he was only 3-of-9 from over 50 yards last season.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, appeared in six games for the Commanders last season and was a respectable 5-of-7 on field goals. He went 4-of-5 from 40-49 yards and missed his only kick from more than 50 yards.

The former Carolina Panther was money in the bank during Washington's playoff run last season. He was 7-of-8 on field goals and nailed the game winner against Tampa Bay at Raymond James Stadium to push the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
