Commanders Rumor Suggests Signing James Conner-Like RB for Kliff Kingsbury

The Washington Commanders' new offensive coordinator likes himself a running back who can carry an offense for a lot of snaps.

The Washington Commanders brought in former Arizona Cardinals head coach to be their next offensive coordinator last season, and he did a very solid job in his first season with the team.

But there is a free agent who the Commanders could sign that would fit how their OC likes to run an offense.

In his time with the Cardinals, Kingsbury really liked utilizing his physical running back in James Conner. There is one free agent back who could fit that mold, and it is former Los Angeles Charger Gus Edwards.

He was released by the Chargers back in March after playing just 11 games due to an ankle injury. But in his time with the Baltimore Ravens, he proved that he could be a very solid option for Washington if they want to use a committee approach when it comes to the backfield.

The Commanders currently have Brian Robinson Jr, and Austin Ekeler as their lead backs, but the latter is a much better pass catcher these days. Robinson had a solid year in 2024, but missed some time due to a few injuries. So having someone to back him up that is also a bruiser could be good idea.

In his last full season in 2023, Edwards had 810 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns while starting just nine of the 17 games he appeared in.

If Kingsbury decides he wants a player that fits the James Conner mold, then Edwards could be an intriguing free agent for the NFC East powerhouse to pursue.
