Cowboys Bringing Back Veteran Who Was a Surprise Cut on Tuesday

The Dallas Cowboys have had an event-filled offseason since January. Despite having countless storylines and unnecessary noise around the team, they are ready to turn the page and lock in on the 2024 season.

The NFL had cutdown day on Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. CT, where teams had to bring down the roster to 53 guys. That led to some surprise cuts but Dallas decided to bring back a defender they released on Tuesday.

According to Jon Machota, the Cowboys are bringing back defensive end Carl Lawson onto the practice squad.

Lawson signed with the Cowboys back on Aug. 19 on a one-year deal but he didn't make the initial 53-man roster. Regardless of that, the Cowboys want him back on the team. He could still need time to ramp up but there is a path for him getting onto the active roster.

Dallas has been looking for more pass-rush help ever since Sam Williams went down with a season-ending knee injury.

Lawson may not be the same player he was earlier in his career but he can still provide some pressure off the edge. In 2021, he tore his Achilles with the New York Jets and had to undergo surgery twice before getting back on the field.

He wasn't as explosive but the Auburn product still generates pressure in the backfield. In his six-year NFL career with the Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals, Lawson notched 119 total tackles, 28 tackles for loss, and 27 sacks.

The 29-year-old still needs to impress the coaching staff to make the 53-man roster but this is a step in the right direction after Tuesday's surprising release.
