Cowboys may sign recently released star thanks to new member of coaching staff

Free agency hasn't even started yet and major NFL news is dropping left, right and center. It already feels like a week ago that the Dallas Cowboys extended Osa Odighizuwa and created nearly $60 million in cap space by restructuring Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.

The Cowboys are in the market for a receiver to start opposite Lamb and the receiver market has been as active as any position before free agency.

Unfortunately, the Seahawks are asking for a king's ransom for D.K. Metcalf, who wants a new contract that pays him close to $30 million per year. Suffice it to say Dallas will not be involved in the Metcalf sweepstakes, but their needs go well beyond receiver.

With so many new faces on Brian Schottenheimer's staff, it couldn't hurt to tap into their connections to attract free agents. New defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is definitely a coach to watch in that regard given his previous stops in Chicago and Indianapolis.

What if we told you that new special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen might be able to help the Cowboys land potentially the most impactful free agent of anyone on staff?

Nick Sorensen can help Cowboys sign Javon Hargrave after 49ers release

The 49ers will release defensive tackle Javon Hargrave on the first day of the new league year next week, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

With Odighizuwa off the board, Hargrave will be one of the most sought-after interior defenders in free agency.

Hargrave played the previous two seasons under Sorensen in San Francisco. Sorensen served as a defensive passing game specialist in 2023 before he was promoted to defensive coordinator last year. That connection may prove huge while Hargrave mulls his future, assuming Dallas kicks the tires.

Hargrave isn't a stout run defender and the Cowboys just re-signed Odighizuwa, who specializes at getting after the quarterback. That should not matter whatsoever. Even with Odighizuwa returning, he can't play every snap at the three-tech. This roster is desperate for more bodies at defensive tackle.

Hargrave would plug a huge need and he has 130 games of experience. Even at 32 years old and coming off a significant injury he'll have a strong market. His history with Sorensen may be the key to bringing him to Dallas.
