Cowboys Part Ways With Ex-Steelers CB

Cornerback Luq Barcoo is still waiting for his next opportunity to play in an NFL regular season game. It’s likely not going to come with the Dallas Cowboys.

Mike Tomlin Luq Barcoo

The Cowboys announced Wednesday that the team has waived Barcoo from their offseason roster. Dallas released Barcoo and defensive tackle Justin Rogers to make roster room for cornerback Robert Rochell and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey.

Barcoo spent about 13 months with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2023-24. The cornerback was on the team’s practice squad during the 2023 campaign.

Barcoo was a free agent for the 2024 season after the Steelers waived him on June 7, 2024. He signed with the Cowboys’ practice squad in January and then received a futures deal after the season.

The cornerback has played three games in his career. Those appearances came with the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2020 season.

Cowboys Waive Former Steelers CB Luq Barcoo

This is the second straight summer a team has released Barcoo. But in Pittsburgh’s case, the Steelers moved on from the veteran cornerback after he sustained an injury last offseason.

The Steelers waived Barcoo due to injury on June 3 of last year. He cleared waivers and then was reverted back to the team’s IR a couple days later.

On June 12, NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported the Steelers removed Barcoo from injured reserve with an injury settlement.

Barcoo entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent for the Jaguars in 2020. Since 2021, though, he’s been the definition of a journeyman.

Barcoo spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets before signing with the Steelers.

During his regular season appearances with Jacksonville, Barcoo played 152 defensive snaps. He didn’t have a role on special teams.

Barcoo started Week 12 of the 2020 season for the Jaguars.

Steelers Offseason CB Depth

This offseason, the Steelers have 11 players on their roster listed as either a cornerback or defensive back. Joey Porter Jr. is expected to be the team’s top cornerback.

As has been the case for a few years, the Steelers will once again count on an aging veteran in Darius Slay to start opposite Porter.

In the slot, 2024 undrafted free agent Beanie Bishop Jr. will likely start.

The Steelers also have Brandin Echols, James Pierre, Donte Kent, D’Shawn Jamison, Quindell Johnson, Cameron McCutcheon, Kyler McMichael and Cory Trice Jr. on the offseason roster.

It will be interesting to see if the Steelers show any interest in Barcoo. But it’s probably unlikely given that they had a chance to bring back the veteran in January if they were interested.

If the Steelers make a cornerback addition this offseason, it makes sense that it would be a veteran with experience, preferably in the slot. Bishop lost snaps to veteran Cameron Sutton during the second half of 2024, and the Steelers didn’t re-sign Sutton this offseason.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox proposed the Steelers as a logical landing spot for veteran cornerback Mike Hilton on Thursday. Hilton played in Pittsburgh from 2017-20.

“Hilton spent his first four seasons in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers appear to be all-in on the 2025 season after signing quarterback Aaron Rodgers. They should be interested in adding corner depth for the upcoming campaign, and Hilton would be an upgrade over second-year slot corner Beanie Bishop Jr,” wrote Knox.
