The Dallas Cowboys still have several areas for improvement. For the most part, they did what they had to do during the offseason. Among the additions they made are George Pickens, Miles Sanders, Javonte Williams, and others.
The running back situation is one to watch out for with the Cowboys’ current roster, as many believe there will be an opportunity for them to potentially trade one of their backs. Some even believe that it could be Sanders, who was recently signed during the offseason.
The latest to predict this was ClutchPoints, which noted that it makes sense for Dallas to have its starting running back in place going into the year. With some question marks around Sanders, perhaps anything can happen in the next few weeks.
“It makes sense for the Cowboys to settle on a starter and have Blue get a decent amount of touches in a secondary role. If the Cowboys split carries between Sanders and Williams, it won’t leave many scraps for Blue.
“And right now, it appears Williams has the inside track to start at the position,” they wrote.
Despite some uncertainties on Sanders, it wouldn’t make much sense for the Cowboys to sign him to the deal they did a few months ago, just to move on from him right now.
Sanders is only playing on a one-year, $1.3 million contract, but what would’ve been the point of signing him a few months ago to get rid of him now?
Sanders Expected to Be Week 1 Starter
Tommy Irish of the Dallas Cowboys doesn’t believe that will be the case, writing that he expects him to be the Week 1 starter.
“As it stands right now, I’ll say Miles Sanders. I think of all the backs in the room, he’s got the most juice left and the best chance to benefit from a fresh start after Sanders struggled in his two seasons with the Panthers. It’s hard to tell given what we’ve seen in padless practices who is rising to the top in the running back room, and will likely be a better question to monitor at training camp, but in shorts Sanders looks a bit more explosive compared to the rest of the group. Of course, guys like Javonte Williams will also have a shot and the room could very well be by-committee again, but I think Sanders gets the nod to start,” he wrote.
Cowboys RB Room a Work in Progress
More importantly for the Dallas Cowboys, it won’t be who starts in Week 1, but who eventually wins the full-time job.
When asked who the Cowboys would start in Week 1, Mickey Spagnola of the team didn’t have an exact answer, but noted that the Cowboys have to figure out who will be their RB1 for the season.
It’s possible that Dallas will attempt to build a running back room by committee, which has value in it, so guys don’t get hurt, but ending the season as the RB1 is more important than starting.
“But if we follow the money and what took place in the offseason 11-on-11 sessions, the leader going into training camp would be Javonte Williams who has been taking the majority of the first team reps. The better question is not who’s the starter, but who is the finisher.”
