Cubs Trade Idea Lands $24 Million Batting Title Winner

The Tampa Bay Rays have tough decisions that could benefit the Chicago Cubs over the next few months.

With the Rays' continued financial constraints, getting rid of any of their expensive players could be something the front office is interested in doing.

Somebody like Yandy Diaz would make perfect sense for the Cubs if that ends up being the case.

Chicago needs to improve its offense, and while the Cubs have set players at first and third base, adding a bat like Diaz is far too challenging to pass up on. Not only does he have some pop in his bat, but he gets on base at an above-average level, evident by his .330 average in 2023.

Justin Mears of Yardbarker predicted he'd be traded this season, adding to the case of the Cubs trading for him.

"He's also starting to get close to free-agency, and we know how that typically plays out in Tampa Bay. After an impressive five-year run, last season the Rays missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018. Should they struggle to contend later this summer, it would not be surprising to hear Diaz's name mentioned as a potential trade chip.

"He's hit at least 23 home runs in two of the past four seasons and despite some strikeout issues in 2024, that isn't due to a swinging to bad pitches, something Philadelphia has struggled with in recent years," Mears wrote.

Diaz will be one of the top names to watch at the deadline. If any team needs a first or third baseman, he should be at the top of their list.

However, the Cubs have a sound enough farm system to realistically complete any deal. If they love what the 33-year-old could bring to their lineup, it's very doable.

He's a career 125 OPS+ bat, a Silver Slugger winner, an All-Star, and much more.

There wouldn't be many better options for the Cubs to consider if he's available.
