When the Dallas Mavericks traded superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, and the 2024-25 season ended in abysmal fashion against the Memphis Grizzlies in the Play-In Tournament, it seemed that the franchise had a vision that would be dark.
Then, the Mavericks got the ultimate gift.
With under a two percent chance, the Mavericks won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. The chance to draft Cooper Flagg out of Duke University will happen for the Mavericks after a season full of torture and heartbreak.
Flagg is one of the most hyped NBA prospects of all time. However, even with being a hyped top pick in the draft, it didn't take long for a Dallas legend to throw an idea for the Mavericks to trade the No. 1 pick to get Doncic back, but the Mavericks should not even think about it.
Mike Modano pitches controversial trade idea to bring Luka Doncic back
Throughout Dallas, Texas, it's normal for all the sports teams to root for one another. From the Dallas Stars, to the Dallas Cowboys, to the Texas Rangers, to the Dallas Wings, and to the Mavericks. Shortly after the Mavericks won the lottery, Stars legend Mike Modano threw out an idea on X.

Modano had the idea of doing a simple one-for-one trade between Flagg and Doncic. While a one-for-one trade of the No. 1 pick for Doncic is impossible due to salary, the Mavericks could send multiple players to Los Angeles to get the trade to go through.
It would send Flagg to the Lakers, and it would send Doncic back to the Mavericks. However, Modano's trade is a move the Mavericks should not even consider.
At some point, the Mavs fans will have to get over Doncic being in Los Angeles. With winning the lottery, the Mavericks can get a guy who will enter the NBA with tremendous hype at 18 years old.
In his one season with Duke last year, Flagg was incredible. Flagg averaged 19.2 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game, and over four assists per game while shooting over 48 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three. Flagg also averaged over one block and steal per game, clearly showing he is one of the most dynamic defensive prospects in this summer's draft.
At 6-foot-9, Flagg has similar abilities to Doncic with his ability to drive, score, and shoot the three at a high level, but they are completely different players. Flagg also should be in better condition and shape, which the Mavericks had concerns about with Doncic, and that should thrill Nico Harrison.
With disrespect to Doncic back in April with removing him from their practice facility display, the bridge has been basically burned with the Mavericks and Doncic. As much as Doncic will forever be a Maverick legend for his contributions, returning to Dallas may not make sense, and it wouldn't feel the same.
Flagg has the immediate chance to come to Dallas and make a name for himself just like Doncic. In 2019, Doncic won the Rookie of the Year, and Flagg will be expected by many to start his Dallas tenure off right by being the NBA's best rookie.
When the Mavericks and their fans needed new hope, they got it by winning the lottery. For more on the Mavericks, stay tuned.
