Derek Carr is already causing a rift between Saints fans and Kellen Moore

The New Orleans Saints have decided to keep Derek Carr, and first-year head coach Kellen Moore sounds like he’s all in on the veteran quarterback.

When new head coach Kellen Moore was first hired, there seemed to be a slight chance that New Orleans could move on from the veteran quarterback. During Moore’s introductory press conference, he was noncommittal on Carr being the Saints’ quarterback, just saying that he respects what he has done in the league, and that he’s still a starter in the NFL.

Well, now that it’s clear Carr will be Moore’s quarterback this season, the first-year head coach has changed his tune. Speaking with the media on Monday, he had a lot of positive things to say about his veteran quarterback.

Moore said that he feels really good about Carr, and he’s excited to team up with him. He went on to express that he took the job with the intentions of top players like Carr being on the roster, so he’s certainly comfortable with him starting. Moore may be saying this now, but he wasn’t speaking like this about Carr when he first got the job. That could be because the decision on Carr’s future came from the front office, which Moore made clear when he deflected all questions about Carr’s contract and possible trade discussions.

While this is the typical coach speak often used when a head coach is trying to support their quarterback, Moore’s words led to some Saints fans being upset with him for the first time in his short tenure with the team. Although he essentially had no choice, his support of Carr is being viewed as him siding with the enemy, and Carr and Mickey Loomis are Saints fans biggest enemies right now.

Moore can’t be faulted for the front office’s bad decisions, though. He inherited Derek Carr and his bad contract by accepting the job to be the Saints head coach, so it’s his responsibility to make it work. If Moore can make it work with Carr under center, Saints fans will praise him relentlessly.
